Meet your guide inside the West Door of Selby Abbey to explore the history of the first monastery to be established in the North of England after the arrival of William the Conqueror in 1066. Wonder at the amazing Romanesque and Gothic architecture and hear how despite two great fires, the collapse of the central tower and the dissolution of the monasteries in the 16th Century, the Abbey has survived as a vibrant place of pilgrimage, events, prayer and worship. Climb to the top of Selby Abbey’s Tower for Spectacular Views and a chance to see the Abbey Bells, Clock and Bell-ringing Chamber – please note that there is a steep, narrow, spiral staircase to the top of the tower with many steps.
Tours are available at other times for groups or individuals by prior arrangement. Contact office@selbyabbey.org.uk (website: www.selbyabbey.org.uk)
