Food & Drink at the Heart of Yorkshire
Making is at the heart of what we do in the Heart of Yorkshire. We have a huge agricultural yield sending grain and food across the UK, as well as supporting research into new protein sources and vertical farming. From the grain stores to the breweries, the region has long fostered a productive connection to its natural resources and the intergenerational skill of its people.
Did you know that England’s first banana can be traced back to Selby? Herbalist, botanist, and merchant Thomas Johnson, born in Selby, is thought to be the first person to bring bananas to our country. Today, the region is still home to innovative local producers, including award-winning butchers, bakers, brewers, distillers, chocolatiers, cheese shops and farmers.
