If you are looking for lots of fun things to do this February half-term, there’s plenty of fun, exciting and affordable things to do in the Heart of Yorkshire this February Half Term.  Whether you are planning to enjoy some fresh air and exercise in the great outdoors, stuff yourself with pancakes on Shrove Tuesday, treat a loved one to a romantic gesture for Valentine’s Day or enjoy a day out with the family, you will be spoilt for choice for great things to do in the Heart of Yorkshire.

Here are some suggestions for getting out and about and making the most of the week:

Pancake Toss Competition, Selby Market Place

Hosted by York Mix Radio and organised by Selby Town Council, Selby’s very first ever pancake toss competition takes place on Shrove Tuesday – Tuesday 13th February. Open to everyone, come and show off your best pancake tossing skills for a chance to win some amazing prizes.

Valentine’s Afternoon Tea or High Tea, Carlton Towers

Afternoon Tea is the most romantic way to treat your loved one. Relax and enjoy a delicious selection of sandwiches, scones and sweet treats on Sunday 11th February. Add a glass of fizz and pastries for a lovely High Tea upgrade. Listen to the romantic ambiance of the classical violinist with Nadia Violin throughout.

Valentine’s Dinner at the Drovers Arms

Enjoy a romantic dinner at the newly refurbished Drovers Arms in Skipwith on 14th, 16th or 17th February.  It will be littered with roses, ‘food of love’ specials from the kitchen team, Champagne and all things delicious.

Half term carriage rides with Little Skipwith Carriage Rides

Join Little Skipwith Carriage rides for a beautiful horse drawn carriage ride through Skipwith woods. Enjoy a 30 minute carriage ride including a selection of teas, coffees or hot chocolate. A selection of food and drinks including afternoon tea, cake, hampers and cream teas are available in their tea room.

Towton Battlefield Trail

Visit Towton Battlefield, the site for the largest and bloodiest battle ever fought on English soil, follow the signposts and information boards.  Towton Battlefield Society was formed in the mid-1990s and has three main objectives – the preservation, protection and promotion of Towton Battlefield. You can join them for a guided walk around the battlefield to hear about the history of the battle on Sunday 11th February.  Visit their website to book your place.

Get active at the Kinsmen Activity Centre

Get the teenagers away from their phones this half term and head on down to the Kinsmen Activity Centre for a completely different day out. Enjoy axe throwing, archery, an air rifle range and more! Must be pre-booked.  Why not stay in Skipwith longer and enjoy a walk on the common and a drink or lunch/dinner at the Drovers Arms.

Have a wild half term outdoors

Explore the great outdoors and discover the many beautiful green spaces in the Heart of Yorkshire. Complete one of the waymarked trails at Skipwith Common, spot herons and kingfishers at Barlow Common Nature Reserve, take a trip pond dipping at Fairburn Ings, or simply take in the beauty of the viaduct and weir, as you wander along Tadcaster’s Riverside. Plane spotting and flying experiences at Sherburn Airfield

Families are welcome to watch the aircraft taking off and landing at Sherburn Airfield from the viewing lounge. Or why not book yourself a flying experience over the wonderful landscape of North Yorkshire? Plus, there’s an outdoor play area and a café too which serves breakfasts, soup, lunches, sweet treats and drinks.

Tours of Drax Power Station and the Skylark Centre

School may be out for the half term holiday but every day is a school day, right?! Feed their imagination and explore the exciting sites and sounds of Drax power station on an organised group tour.  Or visit the Skylark centre and nature reserve for some outdoor fun.  Contact Drax for full details.

Quiz Night at Downstairs @ River Mills
